Studying the molecular mechanisms of olfaction and understanding why certain proteins useful for the tactile system are also found in olfactive neurons. These are the aims of Simone Pifferi, a researcher at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) who has just earned the Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, a European scholarship that will enable him to pursue his studies in Italy.

On Thursday 31 January an international delegation of MEPs of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats visited the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA).

The research, published in the Journal of Statistical Physics, which also involves the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste, is entitled, quite eloquently, "The Social Climbing Game".

Some materials, which have very important electrical properties in electronics, could be replaced by a new organic compound whose processing is simple, economical and respectful of the environment. The discovery has been published in Science magazine and features among its authors two SISSA researchers.

Mentre si moltiplicano gli allarmi meteo in tutta la penisola, le statistiche non ci fanno pensare bene per il futuro a livello globale: mostrano infatti un aumento costantedegli eventi climatici estremi negli ultimi decenni. In questo quadro, il delicato rapporto "triangolare" fra società, scienziati e giornalisti svolge un ruolo cruciale e fa sorgere una domanda: "come si comunicano i dati sul rischio climatico?"
On 20th November from 9.30 a.m. the International School for Advanced Studies has inaugurated the "Welcome Day", a chance to meet the scientists and the students at the school.
Special attention has been given to the students: this event has been open to the broad public and was a chance to welcome new students and to give the awards for the best PhD and Master's theses to those who have completed their studies at SISSA. A lecture by Claudio Bartocci (Professor at the University of Genova) on the famous mathematician Henri Poincaré closed this event.
It's not easy to drive long molecule chains – such as DNA – through a "nanopore" (a pore which is just few millionths of a millimeter wide) because they tend to tangle up.
A simulation carried out by an international group of scientists – among whom are SISSA researchers – has suggested a solution: it's better to "pull" gently without applying too much force, otherwise the molecule could be stopped due to excessive friction. That is an important observation to create innovative DNA sequencing methods.
Some researchers at SISSA have published in PNAS a study to better understand sliding friction in nanotribology: a new simulation model opens the way to new research methods, thanks to colloidal crystals.
