Paleoanthropology in the last years has been going through an exceptional transformation that has allowed to make amazing discoveries (like, for instance, that Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis in ancient times underwent hybridization), and will enable many more in the future.
Vent'anni di tradizione per il Master in Comunicazione della Scienza (MCS) della SISSA, il più autorevole e longevo in Italia in questo settore, che ora mette a frutto l'esperienza maturata nel campo dei media digitali e si rinnova, anche nel nome. Da quest'anno MCS è intitolato al giornalista Franco Prattico, uno tra i suoi fondatori scomparso l'anno scorso. Ma non è l'unica novità del 2013.
The Italian première of the film "Maksimovic. La storia di Bruno Pontecorvo" was held on 11 September, in the Aula Magna of Università La Sapienza. Conceived by Giuseppe Mussardo, a professor of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste, the film retraces the life of the scientist and of the man who embodied the contradictions and the spirit of a tormented century.
A new research coordinated by International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Turin, studies the "code" used by the brain to categorize the objects we see and sheds light on a scientific debate: when, in the process of the brain analysis of visual stimulus, does "shape become meaning"?

Fondazione Telethon has allocated significant funds to a research project on the West syndrome, a complex pathology that affects the nervous system, headed up by Antonello Mallamaci, a neurobiologist at SISSA of Trieste.
A group of physicists that includes scientists of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste have shown how to obtain a particular case of a physical effect – so far never observed in reality – whose studies have earned a Nobel Prize. The scientists have also observed the response of the material subject to such effect. These observations will provide precious indications to the experimental physicists in order to verify, in the future, their theory.

Le Valutazioni sulla Qualità della Ricerca pubblicate dall'ANVUR confermano la SISSA al primo posto per tutti e tre i suoi settori di ricerca. Un risultato senza pari in Italia, che dimostra l'altissima qualità nelle pubblicazioni scientifiche della Scuola.

What happens in our brain when we meet someone from a different ethnic group? Is it possible to fight racism employing scientific knowledge? Elisabeth Phelps, a researcher at New York University, on Friday 19 July has held a public conference titled "Neuroscience of racism."
Con il conferimento del titolo di master honoris causa a Ferruccio De Bortoli si chiude l'evento MAPPE della SISSA. Il direttore de "Il Corriere della Sera" ha tenuto in questa occasione una lectio magistralis in cui ha raccontato la sua esperienza come giornalista e direttore di una importante testata nazionale, e ha spiegato il ruolo cruciale di una corretta informazione scientifica.

La medicina ai tempi di internet: i nuovi modi di fare diagnosi, il monitoraggio delle malattie online, la condivisione dei propri dati e la ricerca di una cura sul web. In un incontro organizzato dagli studenti del Master in Comunicazione della scienza della SISSA di Trieste, si è cercato di capire, con l'aiuto di alcuni esperti, come sta cambiando la medicina nell'era digitale.

Un campo di studi nuovo e vitale, la neuroetica sta attirando l'attenzione della comunità scientifica e dell'opinione pubblica. La Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) di Trieste organizza una scuola estiva, aperta a 15 studenti, per stimolare la formazione e la ricerca in questa nuova area interdisciplinare. La scuola si terrà dal 15 al 19 settembre 2013. Le iscrizioni si chiudono il 29 luglio.
"Challenge Your Assumptions": una serata per discutere di nuove tecnologie e tendenze e del loro impatto sul nostro futuro. Il tutto parte da RE-SEED, un progetto per sostenere l'occupazione di giovani che hanno un elevato grado di istruzione e che vede la SISSA partner con l'Università di Udine e Friuli Innovazione.
The time of the year devoted to guided tours at SISSA of Trieste involving students has just ended. The initiative has been a great success: bookings were "sold out" almost from the very start and the schools that took part in the initiative expressed great satisfaction.
The involvement of students and post-doc fellows at SISSA has been a key factor, as they all participated enthusiastically as "hosts" and guides. This is the first time that SISSA experiments with this new formula that will be definitely repeated next season
The scientific journal Macromolecules dedicates the cover of this month's issue (available online from June 11th) to a research coordinated by Cristian Micheletti of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA). Micheletti and his colleagues,
that include Luca Tubiana (a former SISSA student, now working at the Josef Stefan Institute of Ljubljana) and Angelo Rosa (a researcher at SISSA) simulated the dynamics of the movements with which a polymer tends to knot.
They are young, they are physicists and they arrived in Trieste from various parts of the world to meet and exchange views.
On 3 and 4 June the "Young Researcher Meeting" was held at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), an event organized by students and postdocs of various disciplines to talk about Physics.
One of the challenges faced by those who study friction is finding a connection between the phenomena observed within the macroworld and those in the nanoworld.
The stick-slip, a phenomenon observed at every scale when two surfaces slide on one another, could be the starting point to identify such connection. The scientists at SISSA have studied such phenomenon through a system of "trapped cold ions".
SISSA has always kept focus on the international scientific scene. In such a vein, a recent activity was the creation of a network with some research institutes in Vietnam in view of top-level training in the field of Functional and Structural Genomics.
Two professors of the PhD course in Functional and Structural Genomics at SISSA, Giuseppe Legname (SISSA) and Paolo Carloni (German Research School for Simulation Sciences, Jülich), recently went to Ho Chi Min City to organize a Neurobiology course, dealing with both experimental and computational aspects.
