SISSA is once again a reference point in the Italian scenery of science communication and journalism: an article entitled "Il racconto pubblico della scienza" (the public dissemination of science) by Nico Pitrelli, co-director of SISSA Master's in Science Communication and of SISSA Master's in Digital Science Journalism, has been published in the journal "Il Mulino".

SISSA - Main Lecture Hall

On 18th and 19th September in Trieste a workshop was held by some of the most important cognitive neuroscientists. After granting an honorary PhD to the famous scientist Noam Chomsky, over the next two days SISSA summed up what is at the forefront of cognitive science.

The internationally known scientist Noam Chomsky received on 17th September an honorary PhD in Neuroscience from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste. During his visit, the scientist held a Lectio Magistralis with the title "The minimalist program and language acquisition" in the Main Lecture Hall of the school.

The Summer School on Dopaminergic Neurons, held at SISSA some days ago, has ended successfully. Several speeches were held on cutting-edge research on Parkinson's disease, one of the most common neurological disorders in our society.

July 18-19, 2012

During the Summer School on Dopaminergic Neurons, organised by SISSA and CBM, the most innovative approaches to treat Parkinson's disease will be handled. Internationally known speakers and several researchers will be participating. Within the activity of the school, the results of Dopaminet, a European project involving SISSA and CBM, will be illustrated.

It will be one of the most advanced computer centres in Italy, the second most powerful, with 130 TeraFlops (one TeraFlops equals one thousand billion calculations per second), and a storing capacity of around 200 TeraBytes, totally 32 million hour calculations per year.

July 6, 2012

We all agree on this: the discovery of this new particle, announced last 4th July at CERN, is of historical importance. But are we sure of its real identity?
The director of SISSA, Guido Martinelli, comments on this news explaining why this discovery is "somehow disappointing".

SISSA actively promotes and supports talented young researchers and also this year this can be done by SISSA Excellence Grants, grants for post-doctoral research projects awarded to scientists at the beginning of their career, showing talent, initiative and independence.

This € 392,000 financing divided over 3 years will cover two positions. At the end of the project particularly successful researchers could be considered for a permanent position at SISSA.

The discovery of the Higgs boson is an extraordinary success of scientific research on theoretical and experimental physics and of modern technology, and it is an important step forward to understand the components and the fundamental forces of nature. At SISSA, one of the most important international research centers, Particle Physics is one of the main research fields and some researchers have enthusiastically welcomed this important event.

September 18th-19th 2012

Different fields of cognitive sciences - language acquisition, music, mathematics, reasoning, animal communication, pragmatics and social cognition - and their interactions, as well as neuroscience will be the topics of this workshop.

"Sixty years of condensed matter physics: a changing world, as fascinating as ever in a worrying social context"
Philippe Nozières.

Abstract:
Condensed matter physics has changed since the fifties: I attempt to retrace its evolution in the light of my own trajectory.

On Friday 11th May, SISSA opened its doors to Trieste organizing several events for schools and public: lectures, exhibitions, concerts and games. The theme of the day was "The sound, the hearing and the music", three elements that are representative of the topics studied at the School: neuroscience, mathematics and physics.

A short video sums the day. Enjoy!
