The Planck satellite, launched in 2009 by ESA (the European Space Agency) examines the origin of the Universe: after almost three years the data regarding the first fifteen months of observations have finally been published, describing a Universe that is still in its "child" phase. Besides numerous international agencies, also three Trieste institutes take part in the initiative: the International School of Advanced Studies, Osservatorio Astronomico of Trieste (INAF) and Università di Trieste.

The DNA tends to become entangled, yet according to a research carried out by Cristian Micheletti of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste and by Enzo Orlandini of Università di Padova, it is possible to obtain knot-free filaments by having them pass through a nano-channel. The research is now one of the "hot papers" in the Soft Matter review and is now accessible free of charge for a four week period.

The call for the Master in Complex Actions (MCA) of SISSA, the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, is now open. The course, which aims at integrating scientific thought with the practices of public and private organizations, has now reached its third edition and will feature this year two important new elements: the focus will be on Energy and the destination of the study trip will be Saudi Arabia.

Applications must be received by Tuesday, April 2nd 2013 at 12.00 (Rome time).

Hilbert schemes of points are a traditional field of interest for algebraic geometers. Work by Nakajima and others established a relation between their geometry and the representation theory of Heisenberg-Clifford algebras.

More recent research connected Hilbert schemes with other infinite-dimensional algebras, such as Cherednik algebras, quantum Heisenberg algebras, Kac-Moody algebras, and so on. This conference aimed at providing an updated survey of the state of the art in this area of research in its various aspects.

A few years ago it was found that certain proteins, the prions, when defective are dangerous, as they are involved in neurodegenerative syndromes such as the Creutzfeldt-Jakob and the Alzheimer diseases. But now research is showing their good side, too: when performing well, prions may be crucial in the development of the brain during childhood, as observed by a study carried out by a team of neuroscientists at SISSA which appeared in the Journal of Neuroscience.
