Researchers at SISSA are developing fast and efficient numerical methods to study the behaviour of molecules and materials. The latest work by Angelo Rosa, published in the journal Physical Review Letters, simulated the behaviour of concentrated solutions of "circular" polymers, providing a far more accurate description of the behaviour of these materials than available in the past.
The interest in this type of system stems from the fact that it has important interdisciplinary repercussions: in fact, the behaviour of circular polymers in solutions seems also to describe the way chromosomes function inside the cell nucleus.
Alla SISSA si mettono a punto metodologie numeriche veloci ed efficienti per studiare il comportamento di molecole e materiali. L'ultimo lavoro di Angelo Rosa, pubblicato sulla rivista Physical Review Letters, ha simulato il comportamento di soluzioni concentrate di polimeri "circolari" descrivendo in modo molto più accurato che in precedenza il comportamento di questi materiali. L'interesse per questo tipo di sistemi deriva dal fatto che ha importanti ricadute interdisciplinari: infatti, il comportamento in soluzione di polimeri circolari sembra anche descrivere il funzionamento dei cromosomi all'interno del nucleo cellulare.
