Two new studies coordinated by SISSA reveal important details about the physiological function of the prion protein, the non-pathological form of the notorious prion, the degenerate protein responsible for several diseases including “mad cow disease”. According to the new findings, the protein in its physiological form serves the important function of promoting the growth of neurites, the neural projections along which nerve impulses travel.

Two new European grants have been awarded to Giuseppe Legname, professor at SISSA in Trieste, to study neurodegenerative diseases. The projects awarded the grants involve, in addition to SISSA, other major international centres mainly based in Europe but some in the United States as well. The projects focus on experimental models to study this type of disease.

A group from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste has developed a faster and simpler methodology requiring modest resources for validating physical models ("descriptions" of molecule operation) of RNA used in molecular dynamics. These models are essential for research on RNA, one of the most important macromolecules of life, with computer simulations. The method also helps define areas of improvement for increasing accuracy of the models. The study was published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters.

SISSA’s NeuroMicronica project  – winner of the Start Cup 2015 regional award and the PNICube prize and shortlisted for the Start Cup 2015 national award – has received an ERC Proof of Concept Grant, designed to support ERC grantees with the commercial or societal application of the results of their funded research. the new grant, obtained thanks to the collaboration of multidisciplinary groups working at SISSA, adds to the long list of grants awarded to SISSA by the ERC.

Neurofeedback is a technique used for the treatment of clinical disorders (like depression, anxiety, chronic pain, ADHD and schizophrenia etc.) and enhancement of brain performance.  It is based on the “self-regulation” of brain activations underpinned by the principles of  feedback control systems. Feedback systems  can be found in areas such as cybernetics, industrial automation, quality control, optimization and so on.

Nanotubes can be used for many things: electrical circuits, batteries, innovative fabrics and more. Scientists have noted, however, that nanotubes, whose structures appear similar, can actually exhibit different properties, with important consequences in their applications. Carbon nanotubes and boron nitride nanotubes, for example, while nearly indistinguishable in their structure, can be different when it comes to friction.

Paolo Rossi, Physicist at the University of Pisa, whose eclectic interests range from particle physics to translating early medieval texts, will be the first speaker in this season’s SISSA colloquium series. His talk will focus on the study of surnames through statistical mechanics, a useful approach for investigating population genetics.

Well before starting to speak, children from a very young age pay higher attention to the information received from native speakers of their language compared to the information received from “foreigners”. A new study shows that this behaviour, replicated already at the age of five months, might be the foundation of acquiring culture specific knowledge. The research coordinated by SISSA was published  in the Frontiers in Psychology magazine.

“Womath 2016 - Women and Research in Mathematics: the Contribution of SISSA”, to be held  at SISSA from September 7th to September 9th, is a conference organized with the collaboration of the University of Udine, the University of Turin and of ERC Advanced Grant of Susanna Terracini,  under the patronage of the Region Friuli Venezia-Giulia, of the Regional Commission for Equal Opportunities and of the Association of Journalists of Friuli Venezia-Giulia.

Thanks to a reaction that resembles a sort of proton pinball game, a thin layer of moisture on the surface of a catalysts can improve the efficiency of fuel cells, devices used to transform chemical energy (a fuel like hydrogen, for example) directly into electricity without releasing greenhouse gases in emissions. The study was coordinated by IOM CNR/ SISSA.

Massimiliano Di Ventra, Physicist at the University of California San Diego, will explain the basics of memcomputing, a new computational approach that uses memory for information processing and storage using the human brain as an analogy. The talk will be held in English and is open to the public.
