Photography beyond photography, in other words when taking a picture means creating some kind of artwork, engaging techniques, imagination, creativity, forcing the photographer to interact with his/her own photos. The last appointment of the series “If I knew how to take a good pic, I would always do it” will focus on the key approaches to “artistic” photography, such as Light Painting, HDRI (High Dynamic Range Imaging), Infrared Photography and more.

The seminar will take place on Thursday 15 June in room 128-129, I floor, starting from 6.00 pm.

High quality education, frontier research and advanced know-how are the ingredients for this cutting-edge science centre. And are internationally recognized values when we talk about SISSA. Today, Monday 12 July, a new agreement on a “high level talent training program” will be signed among the Institute in Trieste, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) and Suzhou Institute of Systems Medicine (ISM); this document will seal the beginning of a joint PhD course aimed at recruiting young talents coming from China to study and perform scientific research at SISSA.

New appointment of the series “If I knew how to take a good pic, I would always do it” by Giuseppe Mussardo and Andrea Tomicich. The event will focus on street photography, where images are capable of capturing a mood or a specific moment that words could not easily describe.

From 14 to 16 June 2017, many former students of the Percorso Formativo Comune, who have now permanent or temporary positions in different international universities, institutions and companies, will join SISSA and the University of Trieste to celebrate ten years of the Master program. The conference will consist of some scientific presentations by former students, together with two round tables about the relation between Mathematics and Academia, and the World of Employment.

The Master in High Performance Computing is an innovative degree program (level 7 in the European Qualifications Framework) that prepares students for exciting careers in the fast-growing field of HPC. Set in the stimulating research environment of its co-organizer institutions, SISSA and ICTP, the program combines lectures with hands-on and applied projects to prepare future HPC specialists for academia and industry.

SISSA will hold a conference titled "Geometric analysis on smooth and non-smooth spaces" from 19 to 23 June 2017.
The aim of the conference is to bring together experts with various backgrounds, with the hope to foster an intensive exchange of ideas. Speakers from several international universities will participate in the conference. Inputs from different areas of mathematics are welcome.

A health and environmental educational project that sees boys and girls from Triestine schools engaged as real researchers. This is the goal of "Adopt a Triestine Tiger", an initiative supported by the Municipality of Trieste – Department of Education, School, University and Research – in collaboration with the SISSA "Franco Prattico" Master’s course in Science Communication.

The event will focus on portrait, one of the most difficult types of photography. The capture of a look, a face, a situation: a "candid shot" can freeze time and emotions. The topic will be addressed through the pictures of world-renowned photographers such as Gisèle Freund, Dorothea Lange, Vivian Maier, William Hine, Sebastião Salgado and Steve McCurry.

“Spontaneous brain activity: a key for understanding the mind” is the title of the lecture by Prof. Maurizio Corbetta scheduled for 31 May.  Professor Corbetta is Full Professor and Chair of Neurology in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Padua, Italy. He is also the founding director of the new Padua Neuroscience Center. Introducing his seminar Professor Corbetta says: “It is well known that the brain is organized as a network of connections between nerve cells.

Long-time SISSA Professor, ICTP Scientific Council member and Dirac Medallist Michele Parrinello has won the 2017 Dreyfus Prize in the Chemical Sciences, conferred this year in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry. The international prize, awarded biennially, consists of $250,000, a medal, and a citation. Parrinello, the first recipient from outside the United States, is honored for his groundbreaking developments of molecular dynamics simulation methodology and associated landmark studies of chemical, material, and biomolecular systems.

“Small opening, big ambition” is the title of the second seminar of the series “If I knew how to take a good pic, I would always do it” by Giuseppe Mussardo and Andrea Tomicich. The event will focus on landscape and nature photography in an attempt to answer the following question. Even more than portrait photography, landscape photography is often linked aesthetically with painting: but is that right? The speakers will investigate this topic and present classical and unusual photographs by Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Michael Kenna and Jessica Backhaus.

SISSA amphitheater is ready to host a series of beautiful events that will merge art and science in a unique environment. With six different events planned from 26 May to 14 July, SISSA SUMMER FESTIVAL will offer the opportunity to listen the musicians from Giuseppe Tartini conservatory and attend actress Diana Hobel’s play entitled “Paolo Budinich and the Paradox of the Adventure”. In the program, world folk and tzigane music concert performed by an orchestra of 40 children led by the conductor Martin Schaefer and the show “Lab rats” by Teatro Miela.

Former students of SISSA professional Master’s course in Science Communications “Franco Prattico” (MCS) have an employment rate that approaches 100%. A recent survey by the independent research institute Ixé shows that 95% of them are employed, 60% are working in science communication. Among the many job opportunities offered by MCS, 42% of those employed in science communication works in science journalism, 31% in institutional communication, 30% in publishing and 21,5% in training and education (some are working in more areas at the same time).

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women in Italy and in the world. Today, however, it seems possible to design more selective and effective drugs through numerical simulations. This is what has been revealed by research carried out by the “Istituto Officina dei Materiali” (IOM) of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in Trieste and the International School for Advances Studies (SISSA), in collaboration with the Bellinzona Institute for Research in Biomedicine and the University of Italian Switzerland.

The Physics and Mathematics areas of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste are among the best 350 departments in the Italian university system. As a result of this ranking, they will have access to the funding of 180 departments with almost 300 million euros beginning in 2018. The ranking was compiled on the basis of the evaluation of research quality (VQR) released by ANVUR – the National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research Systems.

A unique opportunity for everybody with a passion for research. SISSA offers 2 fellowships in the framework of an "Advanced Training Programme" leading to a fast track PhD in connection with the Inter-University Master course in Physics jointly delivered by the Universities of Trieste and Udine. The program lasts 2 years and is aimed to candidates who wish to acquire theoretical tools and necessary skills to start a high level research activity in Theory and Numerical Simulation of Condensed Matter Physics. Application will be accepted from 12 May to 20 July 2017.

Another step forward towards superconductivity at room temperature: an experiment at the cutting edge of condensed matter physics and materials science has revealed that the dream of more efficient energy usage can turn into reality. An international collaboration, led by the scientists of Italy’s International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, Università Cattolica di Brescia and Politecnico di Milano used suitably tailored laser pulses to snap the electronic interactions in a compound containing copper, oxygen and bismuth.
