It’s an opportunity for young physicists studying and working around the world to meet face-to-face and exchange views in a constructive and informal setting. The fifth edition of the Young Researcher Meeting will be held at SISSA in Trieste on 14-15 July 2014.  The distinctive feature of the event is that it is organized “by young physicists for young physicists” with an informal format that stimulates interchange among the young participants.

Under extremely high pressure conditions oxygen molecules group into quartets and give rise to a “dance of their magnetic moments”. This, as observed in a new study carried out by SISSA in collaboration with ICTP and published in PNAS, results in magnetic properties never previously observed in these conditions and in theory points to the existence of a new phase of the element, called epsilon 1.

Come ogni anno si aprono le iscrizioni per partecipare alle selezioni per il Master in Comunicazione della Scienza “Franco Prattico” della SISSA di Trieste, l’unico in Italia che vanta più di vent’anni di tradizione in questo campo. Didattica innovativa, possibilità di stage in realtà importanti e borse di studio: un’occasione da non perdere per chi vuole intraprendere le professioni nel campo della comunicazione della scienza.

Categorizing and representing huge amounts of data (we’re talking about peta- or even exabytes of information) synthetically is a challenge of the future. A research paper from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, published in Science, proposes an efficient procedure to face up to this challenge.

Il pregiudizio verso le altre etnie ha basi culturali, ma anche componenti innate. Comprendere questi aspetti ereditari, meno studiati dei primi, è importante per contrastare il fenomeno e migliorare l’integrazione sociale. Parte fra pochi giorni uno studio della SISSA di Trieste in collaborazione con l’Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) di Roma, che studierà le componenti innate del pregiudizio nei gemelli.

When you gesticulate you don’t just add a “note of colour” that makes your speech more pleasant: you convey information on sentence structure and make your meanings clearer. A study carried out at SISSA in Trieste demonstrates that gestures and “prosody” (the intonation and rhythm of spoken language) form a single “communication system” at the cognitive level, and that we speak using our “whole body” and not only our vocal tract.

Ancora aperte le iscrizioni al Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC) organizzato da SISSA e ICTP. Grande l’attenzione posta dagli organizzatori verso le candidature di studenti regionali. Per presentare questa opportunità  ai giovani studenti FVG verranno infatti organizzati incontri nelle università e negli istituti di ricerca regionali, dove i docenti spiegheranno le finalità del master e le allettanti prospettive occupazionali.

Venerdì 13 giugno la SISSA ha celebrato una giornata di festa e incontro con tutta la cittadinanza. Il tema di SISSA IN FESTA 2014 è stato Luce Scienza Arte, ed è stato presentato con mostre, laboratori, demonstration, conferenze, eventi e un concerto.

Al mattino, le attività sono state riservate al personale della SISSA e alle loro famiglie.

Il giornalismo è entrato nell'era dei dati: statistiche, data mining, infografiche richiedono competenze che oggi devono fare parte del curriculum del reporter. La preparazione richiesta per queste attività non sempre però entra nella formazione classica del giornalista, per questo motivo il Master in Comunicazione della Scienza della SISSA di Trieste organizza la Scuola Estiva di Data Journalism, che si terrà a Trieste dal 17 al 19 settembre 2014.

Prion diseases are a class of encephalopathies that have very severe symptoms. The PRION conference, for the past 10 years the main meeting place for the world's leading experts in these neurodegenerative diseases, is being held in Trieste this year.

Sociality, cooperation and "prosocial" behaviours are the foundation of human society (and of the extraordinary development of our brain) and yet, taken individually, people often show huge variation in terms of altruism/egoism, both among individuals and in the same individual at different moments in time. What causes these differences in behaviour? An answer may be found by observing the activity of the brain, as was done by a group of researchers from SISSA in Trieste (in collaboration with the Human-Computer Interaction Lab, HCI lab, of the University of Udine).

Only few days left to sign up to the JCOM Masterclasses. Four courses aimed at scientists, cultural managers, public sector and education professionals, architects, designers, journalists, museum workers and other specialists dealing with scientific/technological communication. These are the JCOM Masterclasses, top-level international training courses held by academics and professionals selected from among the greatest experts in the field.

Superconductors are promising materials, with applications ranging from medicine to transport. Unfortunately, though, their use is for the time being limited to the very low temperatures (close to absolute zero) necessary for superconductivity to occur.

Some materials, however, could be improved so as to obtain higher and energetically less "costly" critical temperatures. A team of researchers coordinated by SISSA investigated a class of conductors at high critical temperature, adding insight into the physics of these phenomena.

When looking for an answer to a problem we may come across a very different solution from what we expected and end up discovering new phenomena and expanding scientific knowledge.

That's what happened to Sébastien Balibar, director of research at the Statistical Physics Laboratory of the École Normale Supérieure of Paris, who was looking for a supersolid when he found "giant" plasticity. Balibar will tell us about these discoveries at the next SISSA colloquium, on May 21 at 2.30 pm.

Mapping the history of life by "peeling back" the layers of ribosome as if they were growth rings of a tree. This is the research focus of Loren Williams, a biologist from Georgia Tech (USA), who will be explaining his latest findings at a public lecture at SISSA.
