We are pleased to announce a new fellowship established in collaboration with the Flatiron Institute in New York. This agreement, initiated by Sandro Sorella and recently finalised, aims to provide a unique research opportunity for one PhD student from SISSA’s Condensed Matter group every two years. The selected student will spend two years at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Quantum Physics (CCQ), working on a joint research project under the supervision of both SISSA and the Flatiron Institute. The fellowship covers the student’s living expenses in New York.

The first recipient of this fellowship is Antonio Francesco Mello, whose research will focus on the classical simulability of quantum many-body systems. He will employ advanced techniques, such as tensor networks and stabilizer formalism, to investigate the complex relationship between entanglement and quantum magic. Mello’s supervisors are Mario Collura from SISSA and Miles Stoudenmire from the Center for Computational Quantum Physics at the Flatiron Institute.

This new fellowship underscores SISSA’s commitment to fostering international research collaborations and advancing the field of quantum physics.

The initiative is dedicated to the memory of SISSA Professor Sandro Sorella.
