15 years mathLab

Founded in 2010 with fewer than ten members, SISSA mathLab is today a well-established reality. On Wednesday, October 29, it will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary with the event Innovation is Mathematics. The celebration will begin at 11:15 a.m. in Room 128-129 and will feature the participation of the group’s founders and members, together with representatives of several industrial partners that have collaborated with mathLab over the years, such as Confindustria Alto Adriatico and Fincantieri.

“The idea behind the creation of SISSA mathLab was to provide SISSA—home to a mathematics division of international excellence—with a translational mathematics laboratory: a place capable of developing models, methodologies, and studies, while building a strong network of relationships with the vibrant techno-industrial landscape of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region,” explains Alfio Quarteroni, professor at Politecnico di Milano and Scientific Advisor of the group during its first four years. “Fifteen years later, I can proudly say that this vision has been fully realized, even exceeding the expectations of the initial dream. In addition to its remarkable ability to engage with local industries, SISSA mathLab is now a prominent reference point on the radar of Europe’s leading laboratories in applied and industrial mathematics.”

Over these years, SISSA mathLab has hosted more than 50 researchers, 110 students (including PhD candidates and undergraduates), produced over 250 scientific publications, and carried out more than 50 research projects, both industrial and academic. The group is now coordinated by Gianluigi Rozza, professor of numerical analysis.

“The first fifteen years of SISSA mathLab, starting from its foundation under the leadership of Antonio De Simone — the group’s first coordinator, from 2010 to 2017), have been intense years of launching and consolidating the various activities — especially in collaborative projects with the industrial world, where we have created a model of innovation through mathematics,” says Rozza. “Years full of inspiration, experimentation, revolutions, enthusiasm, curiosity and opportunities, which have also seen the growth of many talents. I am deeply grateful to SISSA and its Mathematics Area for always believing in mathLab. We are ready to face the major future challenges in medicine, industry and in both the digital and energy transitions. I am proud that mathLab’s development has taken place in Italy, in Trieste, and at SISSA, also thanks to the innovation ecosystem that characterizes the North-East and, in particular, the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.”

Innovation is Mathematics is organized with the support of iNEST (Interconnected Nord-Est Innovation Ecosystem, funded by the National Plan of Recovery and Resilience), FAST Computing, and SMACT Competence Center, under the patronage of the Italian Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIMAI).
