On 25 January 2016, Giulio Regeni was abducted in Cairo. Giulio was a PhD student in Political and International Studies at the University of Cambridge and was in Egypt to carry out his research. His tortured body was found on 3 February on the outskirts of the capital. From that tragic event began a long diplomatic, investigative, and judicial process that, even today, has reached neither a conclusion nor answers.
Giulio was a brilliant researcher who had chosen to devote his life to study and knowledge. He was a young man travelling through the world, observing societies in order to understand them and, through his work, to help improve them.
On the tenth anniversary of his disappearance, SISSA remembers him as an example of passion, determination, and courage. Our School joins all those voices calling for the silences, evasions, and unanswered questions that still surround this tragic case to finally be broken.
For this reason, we make our own the appeal of his parents:
“We will not wait. We demand truth and justice.”
