The new edition of SISSA Women in Mathematics is scheduled for June 12, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., exactly one month after the International Women in Mathematics Day on May 12, established to commemorate Maryam Mirzakhani—the first woman to be awarded the Fields Medal.

The event is conceived as a space for dialogue and exchange on the role of women in research, with the aim of encouraging a shared reflection on the challenges and barriers they still face in academic environments today. The initiative is organised by the SISSA SIAM Student Chapter, the School’s Mathematics Area, and SISSA mathLab, in collaboration with SISSA Medialab.

The event will open with a panel discussion dedicated to the gender gap in academia, featuring three researchers and SISSA alumnae:

  • Sara Daneri, Associate Professor at Gran Sasso Science Institute;
  • Harini Desiraju, research fellow at the University of Oxford;
  • Giovanna Marcelli, Assistant Professor at the University of Roma Tre.

The discussion will be moderated by Marta Fornasier, a trained mathematician who now works as a science communicator at SISSA Medialab. The panel will be followed by three scientific talks delivered by the invited speakers.

The event will be held in a hybrid format. Online participation will be possible via Zoom at the following link:
