Supporting people from outside the European Union who come to SISSA to study, conduct research or collaborate with the School is the aim of a memorandum of understanding signed on 23 September 2026 by SISSA Director Andrea Romanino and Trieste Police Commissioner Lilia Fredella.
The three-year agreement establishes cooperation between SISSA and the Police Headquarters (Questura) to simplify the issuing and renewal of residence permits for study, research and teaching. It provides practical support for international mobility, an essential part of SISSA’s research and education activities.
“SISSA is international by nature, and this is reflected in the fact that we work at the frontier of knowledge, which advances through an international collaborative effort. The mobility of our researchers is therefore very important, including for younger researchers who are taking their first steps on the international research stage. We are very grateful to the Questura and the Police Commissioner,” Romanino said, “who have once again shown their understanding of the needs of scientific institutions, and of SISSA in particular.”
Police Commissioner Fredella highlighted SISSA’s importance to Trieste and Italy, stressing that a simpler, more tailored welcome can help make work and study easier for teaching staff and students.
