On Friday, 6 November 2026, SISSA will celebrate the beginning of the new academic year, the 48th since its foundation. The inaugural ceremony will take place at 11:00 a.m. in the “Paolo Budinich” Main Lecture Hall.
The event will open with institutional greetings and a welcome address by SISSA Director Andrea Romanino, who will officially launch the new academic year. This will be followed by contributions from members of the SISSA community: Cristina Cortelli, representing the administrative staff, and Gianmarco Puleo, representing the student body.
One of the highlights of the event will be a lectio magistralis entitled “Mathematics After AI: A Profession Transformed”, delivered by Gigliola Staffilani of the Department of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The ceremony will also include an awards presentation recognising the achievements of SISSA students and staff. The event will conclude with a musical performance by the Giuseppe Tartini Conservatory of Trieste.
The event will be hosted by science communicator Gianluca Dotti.
Simultaneous interpreting will be available, and a buffet will be served to participants at the end of the ceremony.
