La Sissa è un centro di ricerca e alta formazione di eccellenza. È una delle sei scuole superiori universitarie a ordinamento speciale, insieme alla Normale di Pisa, alla Scuola superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa, alla Scuola Imt Alti studi Lucca, alla Scuola universitaria superiore Iuss di Pavia e al Gran Sasso Science institute dell'Aquila. È stata tra i primi istituti a conferire il titolo di Phd (Philosophiae Doctor), equiparato nel 1987 al titolo di dottorato di ricerca attivato in Italia in quegli anni.

Costruì letteralmente il Centro di fisica di Miramare e partecipò allo sviluppo di Trieste come città scientifica: oggi, a quasi sessant'anni dalla sua nascita nel 1964, si terrà l'ultima assemblea del glorioso Consorzio di Fisica di Trieste, voluto da Paolo Budinich come strumento per perseguire la vocazione scientifica della città. [...] l Consorzio nacque nel secondo dopoguerra, «nel periodo in cui si cominciava a intravedere la possibilità di un'economia della conoscenza», dice Fantoni. Lo statuto venne sottoscritto il 2 novembre del '64 dall'Università, il Comune, la Provincia e la Cassa di Risparmio (ai fondatori si aggiunsero nel tempo il Ministero dell'università, la Sissa, gli Istituti nazionali di fisica, la Cciaa).

Alla Scuola internazionale superiore di studiavanzati, che in Italia è tra le istituzioni con la maggior quota di finanziamenti Erc in rapporto al numero di ricercatori, dal 2007 ad oggi ad aggiudicarseli sono stati in 30, dei quali solo tre donne.
Katja Reinhard e Laura Donnay sono le ultime due in ordine di tempo. Sono poco più che trentenni, parlano solo qualche parola di italiano, eppure a Trieste gestiscono 2,5 milioni di euro di finanziamenti europei per indagare le profondità della mente umana e dell'universo.

Fondata nel 1978 tramite il decreto presidenziale emanato nell'ambito degli interventi legislativi che seguirono il terremoto del Friuli del 1976, la Sissa fu concepita dal suo fondatore, il fisico Paolo Budinich (foto), come un istituto di ricerca avanzata, con un forte carattere internazionale, innovativo e agile dal punto di amministrativo. Ma anche un centro di formazione, esclusivamente post-laurea, altamente selettivo.
