Con una formazione in Ingegneria Elettronica all'Università di Pavia e un dottorato in Mathematics and Scientific Computing, Heltai ha svolto attività di ricerca in istituzioni di primo piano come il Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences di New York, la Penn State University e la SISSA di Trieste, dove è stato direttore del Master in High Performance Computing dal 2013 al 2023.
