As a leading Italian member, SISSA (Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati) has joined the prestigious AI Alliance. In this important achievement, SISSA follows in the footsteps of ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics “Abdus Salam”), another Trieste institute. The AI Alliance is an international network dedicated to AI development. Established in 2023, it brings together over 120 entities, including universities, research institutions, startups, enterprises, governmental organizations, and non-profit foundations from around the world.

By joining this large-scale initiative co-founded by IBM and Meta — which includes members such as Yale University, CERN in Geneva, and the University of Tokyo,— SISSA affirms its commitment towards open innovation, exploring AI advancements from technological, applied, and governance perspectives. The AI Alliance seeks to drive progress, enhance safety, promote inclusivity and competitiveness, while maintaining the highest scientific standards. By doing so, the AI Alliance aspires to benefit society. In this context, as a leading research and academic institution, SISSA will make significant contributions in both training and research to advance AI that is open.

SISSA’s inclusion in this important network underscores its excellence, as highlighted by Roberto Trotta, head of the Theory and Data Science group: “Only four years since it was founded, the SISSA Data Science and Theory research group has seen its contributions been recognized globally in the crucial area of Artificial Intelligence, which is pivotal both for science and society. Our future collaboration within the AI Alliance will allow us to achieve even greater results and visibility. We are very excited to contribute substantially advancing AI research and education, while studying the impact that such technology has on our lives.”

SISSA Director Andrea Romanino adds: “Our participation in the AI Alliance opens to a new strategic opportunity to strengthen our institute’s positioning – both locally and internationally – in the field of data science and artificial intelligence. At the same time, it is a recognition of the quality and significance of the research and teaching carried out at SISSA in this area. It also serves as motivation to further enhance our global impact through new, prestigious collaborations and activities with the numerous AI Alliance partners.”
