Luca Heltai, SISSA Professor of Numerical Analysis, is one of the Invited Plenary Speakers at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE23) that will be held in Amsterdam from the 26th of February to the 3rd of March. The SIAM CSE conference seeks to enable in-depth technical discussions on a wide variety of major computational efforts on large-scale problems in science and engineering, foster the interdisciplinary culture required to meet these large-scale challenges, and promote the training of the next generation of computational scientists.

“Open source software has had a significant impact on computational science and engineering. I will present our experience with one of the most successful examples of community-driven development we contributed to developing in the last 20 years: the deal.II library. Our work has provided researchers and engineers with a high-quality tool for solving partial differential equations, facilitating collaboration, and promoting transparency and reproducibility in research. Its impact is evident in thousands of publications and enables individuals and small businesses to compete with larger companies” commented Heltai.

Expert in the development of numerical methods and algorithms for the solution of biological, physiological, and industrial problems modeled by partial differential equations, Heltai is co-founder of the joint SISSA-ICTP Master’s program in High Performance Computing (MHPC). He has also contributed to the design and establishment of the Master Degree in Data Science and Scientific Computing offered jointly by SISSA, ICTP, University of Trieste, and University of Udine.
