After a break due to the pandemic, the programme for collaborations of excellence in research and education has started again this year with the arrival of the mathematician Don B. Zagier of the Max Planck Institut für Mathematik in Bonn.

Zagier’s main area of work is number theory and its applications in areas like knot theory and mathematical physics. His presence at SISSA represents a great opportunity for students to interact with an exceptional scientist and explore new fields of modern mathematics.

With an international education, Don Zagier obtained two bachelor degrees from MIT at 16 and a PhD from Oxford at 20. He has been one of the directors of the Max Planck Institut für Mathematik in Bonn and professor at the College de France in Paris. He is now Distinguished Staff Associate at ICTP and member of the National Academy of Sciences and many other prestigious organizations.

Thanks to the same programme Daniel Cabra of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata in Argentina and Ivan Kostov of CNRS will join SISSA after the summer as visiting scientists in the Physics Area. Thus, they will also add to the 15 scientists that already visited SISSA since the start of the initiative in 2018.

Through the programme for collaborations of excellence in research and education, SISSA supports the presence of Italian and foreign scientists of renowned scientific and cultural level as well as refugee scientists.

The nextdeadline for applications is on 30/09/2021, at 1 pm (CEST).
